Reformer Pilates for back pain

Most everyday back pain is not about one dramatic injury; it comes from weak deep-core and hip muscles, stiff hips and upper backs, and hours of sitting. Reformer Pilates targets exactly those things, with the springs supporting your spine while you build strength.

How the reformer helps

Lying on the carriage takes gravity out of the equation, so you can strengthen your abdominals, glutes and back extensors without compressing the spine. The springs give feedback – you can feel when you are bracing correctly – and we can load an exercise very gradually. Sessions also work on hip and thoracic mobility, which takes pressure off the lower back.

What to expect

We start with a conversation about your history, what aggravates and what eases your pain, and any advice from your GP or physiotherapist. Then:

  • Breathing and finding a neutral, comfortable spine position.
  • Gentle mobility for the hips and mid-back.
  • Deep-core and glute activation, progressed only as fast as your back is happy with.
  • Postural strength for the upper back and shoulders, especially if you work at a desk.

Working alongside your physio

Pilates complements physiotherapy rather than replacing it. If you have a diagnosed condition, a recent injury or pain that radiates into a leg, please see your GP or physiotherapist first and share their guidance with us – we are happy to build sessions around a rehab programme.

Prices

A single 1:1 session is £25 and a Duet is £20 per person. Packs bring that down to £22 per 1:1 session and £17 per person for Duet. Consistency matters most with back pain, so weekly sessions with a 5- or 10-pack are what we usually suggest.

How booking works

Pick a session type and a time on the live calendar, tell us a little about yourself, then pay by card or at the studio. The whole thing takes about two minutes and your confirmation e-mail includes a calendar file.

  • Only genuinely free slots are shown – no back-and-forth messages.
  • Complete the short health form once; it is kept private and reviewed before your first visit.
  • Reschedule or cancel yourself, free of charge, up to 2 hours before the session.
  • Buy a 5- or 10-session pack later if you decide to continue – your first session never has to be a commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pilates safe if my back hurts right now?

Gentle, supported movement is usually better than complete rest, but acute pain, numbness, weakness or pain after an accident needs medical assessment first. Once cleared, we adapt everything to your comfort.

How quickly will it help?

Many clients feel looser and more supported after the first couple of sessions; lasting change in strength and posture typically takes six to twelve weekly sessions.

I have a disc problem / sciatica – can I still come?

Often yes, with your clinician's agreement. Tell us on the health form and we will avoid loaded flexion and anything that provokes symptoms.

Will it help my posture at a desk?

That is one of the most common reasons people come to us. We strengthen the upper back and open the front of the shoulders and hips, and give you two or three things to do at your desk.
